Reflection on Instructional Change:

My goal was to plan more effective class discussions and facilitate an engaging discussion.

I implemented a discussion strategy called "Jigsaw" from the Promoting Active Learning course. Students were assigned a portion of a reading, they read their part, then met with like reading peers to share what they learned. The next round was sharing with a heterogeneous group that did not have the same assigned reading.

My strategy was to use slides with directions and take breaks between sections. The main slide I used when groups were ready to create their jigsaw included these directions: First, take turns with your freestyle thoughts related to your reading. Second round, cover any below not yet mentioned:

I felt the conversations were engaging. Students were individually responsible for their reading portion so no one could sit it out. It was small group so students had a lowered affective filter. Students appreciated not having to read the entire passage, so it felt like less work with the same conceptual knowledge attained.

Watching the ACUE video vignettes was my favorite part of the training. I am alone in my classroom, teaching in isolation. Watching how other instructors interact with their students alsways seems to energize me and give me new ideas.

My Observe and Analyze group was great. The lead was supportive and I appreciated the feedback I received from the group. I enjoyed analyzing the other members' video clips.

Faculty Bio Dr. Andrea Adins

Andrea Adins, PHD
	I am a former classroom teacher who has taught many years of public school, fourth through eighth grade, to include designated ELD, single subject science, and single subject social science. I’ve had student teachers in my own classrooms, plus taught at the university level for nearly two decades. I am from Sacramento and am passionate about improving the lives of our area children and young adults. This is my seventh year as a lecturer in the College of Education at Sacramento State. For fun I like to put things together IKEA style, knit, travel, walk my dog and ride my bike.
