ETHN 11: Intro to Ethnic Studies

Reflection on Instructional Change:

I chose to have my students create a concept map after an important lecture toward the end of the semester. The lecture and the concept map were designed to help students process and make connections across the units of the course to better understand the role of race, class, and gender in the United States.

With the concept map, I was able to prompt students to make sense of the course material in a way that worked well for them. I was then able to assess their understanding of the course material after class. It turned out to be an effective formative assessment.

The ACUE activities were really helpful. I took notes and made a list of practices I'd like to try in the future. I do think I could have done a better job incorporating the workplace/internship type of activities into my course immediately, but I plan to do more of that in the future.

During the O&A, I found that I could have better prepared students to do a concept map by giving examples. I plan to do several concept maps throughout the course before asking students to do one. I usually do this in my in-person classes, and I guess I just haven't figured out how to do a concept map on Zoom.
