FSHD 150: Family Stress and Coping: Multicultural Focus

Reflection on Instructional Change:

One of the practices shared by the experts and faculty in this module that I implemented is asking "Just One Question". Asking questions is important for students in the classroom, but even more important is asking the right questions. The old saying "there are no wrong questions" bears some scrutiny. As I learned in this module, the art of asking a good question can benefit students’ understanding of the material. Therefore, I implemented the “Just One Question” forum as suggested by ACUE. I had students consider a case study of a patient who came in with an issue at home. Students were provided with just enough background information to know the case well, but not enough to know how to solve it or best help the patient. Students were assigned to groups of 3 to work together to create a list of questions that would best help inform them of the patient’s underlying issue.

Students really enjoyed this activity. At first, they were confused about the purpose of this activity; however, they soon realized that this is a technical element of what counselors, at times, have to do in clinical settings. Students found it hard to limit their questions to just one. After groups submitted their one question to me, students were allowed to check in with other groups to ask what question they had asked. This soon prompted a class-wide discussion, and students made connections to what theory taught us about effective counseling practices and strategies.

The ACUE Demonstration Videos of faculty effectively teaching online really piqued my interest because it is not often I have the opportunity to observe a colleague's teaching, so that it can help inform my own teaching. The CTL "Observe and Analyze" synchronous Zoom session with my colleagues also fulfilled this interest of mine so that I can better calibrate what I can do better to support my students through my teaching.

My "aha" moment was realizing the ACUE Commons space exists. This is a nice treasure trove of resources that I can refer to throughout the year to inform my teaching.

**Evidence of Instructional Change**
The Activity I Updated This is the case study for students to consider for the "One Question" activity.	Student Group Work Students get together to "solve" the missing piece by deciding on their "One Question"	Exposure and Experience for Real-Life Application Professional services to families, like as counseling, require such problem-solving skills demonstrated through this activity.

**Faculty Bio**
	I am an associate professor of family studies and human development in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences at Sacramento State University. My scholarly interests center on issues of fatherhood, parenting, and children's development. My teaching philosophy is grounded in the belief that the information my students learn will benefit both their personal and professional development. I teach courses such as The Child in the Family, Adolescent Development, Issues in Parenting, and Family and Social Issues.
