FASH 130 History of Western Fashion

Course Description

A study of dress in Western civilization from ancient times through the present. An interdisciplinary approach is used to examine how clothing communicates values displayed by the individual and functions as a reflection of trends in technology, political events, social ideals, and cultural developments such as art and music. Emphasis on the contributions and perspectives of women as well as differing roles in the production, dissemination, and consumption of clothing in relation to socioeconomic groups. 3 units

FASH 130 is a 3 unit upper division course that fulfills GE area C1 Arts, FASH major requirements, and FASH minor elective. Enrollment cap has been 40.

Motivation for Preparing Your Course for QM Certification: 4 Standards Participation

FASH 130 History of Western Fashion has been offered as both an online synchronous and asynchronous course and it covers very extensive amount of contents, covering over 5000 years of western historic fashion. I wanted to learn the best strategies to make my Canvas course very well organized, easy to navigate, intuitive, effective and engaging for students. I will be using various online instructional methods I have learned in this Faculty Learning Community to best support student learning in the online environments.

Alignment or Engagement Changes Addressed in Course

During Fall 2024 FLC, I have worked on the General Standards 1 to 4:

GS 3. Aligning Objectives and Assessments

GS 4. Aligning Objectives and Learning Materials

To address General Standard 1, I added Module 0. Start Here: Welcome and Getting Started!, which contains various subtabs providing clear overview of the course and introduction, expectations, where to get help, etc. To address General Standard 2, I have created module objectives which align with the course learning objectives. Lastly, I have revised and developed assessments and learning materials to align with module objectives.

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this class, students will be able to:

Identify styles of clothing from antiquity to the present, in approximate time periods.
Identify key characteristics of fashion forms (i.e. objects, styles, presentations), such as materials, techniques, constructions, and designer hallmarks, and evaluate the degree of quality and innovation.
Integrate a fundamental understanding of various artistic forms, genres, and cultural forces by comparing the ways in which they align and contrast both within fashion and other fine and applied arts.
Analyze socioeconomic issues that shape the apparel industry throughout history and the groups most influenced by them.
Describe the histories of colonialism, appropriation, trade, and political conflict in relation to design and other cultural forms, and explain their impact on fashion today.
Describe the influences that historical events, art movements, social values, technology, and environment have on fashion as a social force and the forms it produces.
Examine women’s contributions and perspectives in relation to the production and consumption of fashion.
Demonstrate an understanding of fashion as both reflection and expression by forecasting future trends and making recommendations for future fashion forms.
Conduct research and analyze the subject matter to form independent judgments on chosen topic.

Plan for Pathway toward QM Certification

I will submit my proposal to enroll in the Spring FLC to help me prepare for the last four standards. By May 2025, I will have completed a self-assessment of all 8 standards. I will revise the course as needed during summer 2025 and submit the course for QM certification at the beginning of Fall 2025.

Faculty Bio
	Dr. Minjeong Kang is an Associate Professor of Fashion Merchandising and Management Program. She teaches subjects including History of Fashion, Introduction to the Fashion Industry, Textile Science, etc. Her research focuses on fashion consumer behavior and marketing strategies.
