Reflection on Instructional Change:

I tried a course activity as suggested in the ACUE video "Using AI to Enhance Both Efficiency and Learning". I was going to ask GenAI to draw flawed conclusions about breaching experiments and then ask students to identify where the bot went wrong. I struggled getting the AI to intentionally make mistakes. Therefore, I asked the students to ask the following question: "Ask AI (e.g., ChatGPT, Copilot) if breaching experiments are ethical."

The students responded well to the ACUE technique. We had a lively discussion about the strengths and weaknesses of AI technology. The technique helped the students practice what they learned. Further, the chance to review their notes assisted in getting new learning into their long-term memory.

In my classes, I post questions related to assigned readings to help students review and understand the main point an author is making in the text. I used GenAI to help me create questions for these new readings, saving me considerable time. As described in the ACUE handout "Use GenAI to Create Instructional Materials", asking students questions after they have done a reading is useful to gauge comprehension and encourage the application of knowledge.

I found the "Observe and Analyze Session" to be very helpful to my teaching. I've always found making changes to my course difficult as sticking with what has worked in the past can be very tempting. However, the encouragement and warm feedback provided by my colleagues really made me more confident in the changes that I made.

Practice and Reflect Teaching and Learning with AI:

I've always struggled to create welcome announcements for my classes. I've been using the same announcements I've used for years. With the help of AI, I created new welcome announcements that offer encouragement and support to my students. One challenge with integrating AI is I still don't have a definitive view on the responsible use of AI in academics. I think that the answer will change as the technology advances.

Faculty Bio

Faculty Bio: I have been a lecturer at Sacramento State since the Fall of 2014. Throughout my time as a lecturer here at Sacramento State, I have worked hard to connect and build relationships with a diverse population of students. I have reached out to students from all walks of life, including those who represent historically disadvantaged groups, by helping them in their academic careers both inside and outside the classroom. Teaching is my calling. Working with Sacramento State students has been the most fulfilling professional experience of my life.
