Reflection on Instructional Change:

Selected ACUE Technique: Empowering Students Using AI

One of the topics I teach in the course is media literacy, students need to analyze bias, propaganda and fallacy in media reports. I designed an activity that students practice identifying fallacy individually and share with their peers. Moreover, this semester they used AI to help them identify fallacy and analyze the media article.

Students had positive responses about using AI, for examples,

AI helped me understand the article better by breaking it down into the different fallacies."
"AI was helpful and gave me more ideas than I thought of."
"ChatGPT was useful by reflecting the fallacies as well as breaking the article down and helping me dissect the article into three main parts."
"Using AI for this task was very useful for collecting and polishing my thoughts."

Before taking this ACUE class, I have limited knowledge about AI. The interaction with the FLC activities helps me recognize the potential of using GenAI as a tool to create engaging instructions which will enhance students’ learning experience.

In addition, the collaborative learning community supports my wellness and a sense of belonging.

The CTL "Observe and Analyze" synchronous zoom session with colleagues provide me a variety of ways of implementing AI in the courses, such as interviewing historical artist, interacting with clients, writing Effective prompts, etc. I feel excited to use similar activities in my future class.

Practice and Reflect Teaching and Learning with AI:

In the past, students found it challenged to identify fallacy and evaluate the media reports backed by good reasoning and evidence. This semester, I came up with the additional activity of using AI as their study companions. Overall, students responded to the activity positively. One student expressed a thoughtful reflection: "AI is helpful for identifying fallacies but may overlook nuances. It serves as a useful tool alongside human judgment."

Since students spent most of the time doing the practice, we only had a brief discussion about the benefits and drawbacks of learning with AI. One improvement I will apply in the future is to spend more time to discuss about AI-inclusive and AI-resistance learning experiences. I will provide students updated information and resources, as well as prepare them how to make the best use of AI. I will be mindful and keep balance about the use of GenAI that both leverage and resist the influence of GenAI technologies.

	I am a faulty member of teaching credential program, and also teach undergraduate courses. I like to read, hike. My family has been to Lake Clementine, and passed foresthill bridge. I learned that the bridge is the highest bridge by deck height in California. How interesting!!
