NURS 138: Nursing and the Childrearing Family

Reflection on Instructional Change:

For my instructional change, I implemented the "Stop, Start, Continue" method. During our class sessions, we use Google sheets for students to collaborate on. They develop content from the book (see sample below):

From our exam results, we know these tables help students apply and learn the content, but we get mixed reviews at the beginning of the semester. To implement "Stop, Start, Continue", I waited for three class sessions to pass so they had experience using the worksheets. During class on Renal issues, I explained the purpose of the content worksheets and group work. About halfway through the exercise, I explained the "Stop Start Continue" and handed out hard copies of the forms.

Students completed the form in class, and left them for me after class. This was a great way to get feedback in the moment. Student feedback was varied. They know the forms work, but they want lecture. They also don't want to be put into random groups - they want to stay with their friends. After each exam, students report the worksheets as helpful.

It's essential to explain to students "WHY" we use the worksheets, and how it helps them learn. This needs to be done frequently, and start at the beginning of the semester. We know having students break out and meet new people is good for their mental health, but we weren't explaining that clearly.

The Observe and Analyze sessions were very helpful. Great feedback from colleagues. They emphasized how I should clarify why these forms are good for learning. And that a variety of opinions from students about the teaching method is actually good to reach a variety of learners.

**Faculty Bio**
	Bridget Parsh, EdD, RN, CNS, CPN Dr. Bridget Parsh is Professor in the School of Nursing, and author of more than 80 peer-reviewed publications. She has experience in pediatric nursing, research, clinical nursing for pediatrics, and first year college student experience. At Sacramento State she teaches NURS 138 (pediatric nursing), NURS 120, and in the MSN and RN to BSN program. From 2012 to 2019, she was Director of First YearExperience, and works closely with students interested in the nursing major. Dr Parsh has a daughter who is an OR RN in San Diego, a son who graduated from Sac State in Political Science (then moved to Washington, DC), a husband who works for the Sac City Unified School District, and a pug named Bubbles. She loves to travel (especially to Italy), go to concerts, and stand up paddle board on the American River.
