MBA 271: Integrated Entrepreneurship Management

Reflection on Instructional Change:

During this fall semester, I had the opportunity to teach the MBA 271 'Integrated Entrepreneurship Management' course. This was my first experience teaching a graduate-level course, and I decided to apply techniques learned from the ACUE IIPLL course. While many techniques from ACUE resources were used, two of them were the main focus: 'Sharing the relevance of your course content to students’ academic and career goals' and 'Using a class or online activity reaction survey'. MBA students, with their work experience, are distinctly interested in applying classroom knowledge in their careers. It was therefore crucial for me to explain the importance of the classroom material for their future careers and to receive feedback from them.

At the beginning of each class, I consistently mentioned the weekly objectives, a strategy I adopted from another ACUE course. Additionally, I included an objective that highlighted the connection between class learning and students' future careers. This approach notably increased student motivation by showing the relevance of their classroom experiences to their lives beyond the school. Furthermore, I conducted short online surveys to assess the course's difficulty level and its usefulness in imparting entrepreneurial knowledge for their careers. I believe these practices have enhanced my teaching, although I will need to wait a few months to receive comprehensive student course feedback.

I always find the 'Observe and Analyze' sessions with colleagues at Sac State extremely beneficial. This time, I sought advice on how to address student feedback regarding an ambiguous assignment rubric. Specifically, the student informed me that the assignment guideline and the rubric is somewhat misaligned in their view. My colleagues provided insightful and detailed guidance, enabling me to immediately implement an improved rubric.

One 'Aha' moment from my observe and analyze session was realizing the need for more 'observe and analyze' sessions with colleagues in my own department. By revising my teaching materials and applying immediate improvements based on the feedback from these sessions, I've seen significant enhancements in my teaching approach, due in part to the outstanding feedback received. This will help everyone significantly, particulalry for junior faculties including myself.

**Faculty Bio**
	My name is Nam Kyoon (Nathan) Kim. I was born in Seoul, South Korea and lived there for more than 20 years. I received my PhD Degree in Entrepreneurship at Ivey Business School in Canada, with a dissertation research studying Coworking spaces and the community of entrepreneurs. Particularly, I am interested in how social communities of entrepreneurs are created in Coworking spaces and how these communities affect entrepreneurial outcomes.
