N143: Leadership & Management in Nursing

N143 is one of the final courses our nursing students take before graduating. This course gives them a chance to develop leadership skills, and prepare for the transition to the professional role. It can be a very daunting semester, so these students need a lot of support as they embark on their nursing careers.
From the Wellness FLC, we implemented several strategies including
- Extra credit for self-care activities
- A shared music playlist for the class
- Using PhotoVoice for students to get to know each other a little better.
- Brought in alumni to share their experiences.
  
  Before the semester started, the previous class told them what the class would be like. I had changed a lot so they kept asking "when are we going to do...?". My response was "We are not doing that this semester" There was a lot of anxiety around the changes, so these team-building wellness activities helped open communication. Students got to know each other better after spending three semesters on Zoom. Students were quite surprised and grateful by these course changes.
  
  In the FLC, we used wellness strategies to start class. This was most helpful. Take a minute to re-center on the classroom brought me back from all the work "I had to do". I was more open to learning because of these strategies. It was also helpful to hear from others what worked in their classrooms.

N143 has been completely revised. This includes adding a lot of wellness strategies for these graduating students. More work needs to be done to develop the students. This semester we are having half asynchronous and half synchronous session - but in fall we will switch to a 1/3 asynch and 2/3 synch model. We need more time together to develop self-care and leadership skills for the stressful careers these students will have in just a few months.

Faculty Biography
	Bridget Parsh EdD, RN, a Professor in the Sacramento State School of Nursing, has worked as a Registered Nurse in a variety of pediatric settings including emergency room, outpatient, intensive care, and nursing education. She has taught pediatric nursing for more than twenty years and has written more than 60 peer-reviewed articles on the topics of nursing, first-year experience, classroom inclusivity, general education, and team building.
