SWRK 151: Health Services and Systems

Reflection on Course Improvements::

Participating in this FLC was enlightening.  I learned the significance and utility of clearly articulating the connection between content and published course objectives.  I was surprised at the level of detail required throughout the QM rubric but also can see the importance.  Lastly, I walk away from this with much more direction and motivation for improving my course.

Developing specific learning objectives that directly align to the course modules will have the greatest impact on both myself and my learners.  For me, it is a way that I can monitor and ensure that I am keeping within the published course objectives and appropriately using course materials.  For learners, it will address the disconnect that students will interpret differently.  Learners will know definitively what is expected of them and how the course materials propel them towards that understanding.

One area in my course that I am working on to promote accessibility is documents.  This includes using headers in Word documents, changing PDF/OCR scans to searchable text, and using the Adobe accessibility checker to work towards WCAG and PDF/UA standards.

Module Objectives:

1.  Describe the factors that determine vulnerability in health care
2.  Illustrate how vulnerable populations face access to care issues
3.  Identify and describe the main public programs used by vulnerable populations

These module objectives align with two of the course objectives:

d).  Describe access to care issues as they exist or have been remedied for the poor, near poor, ethnic minorities and households headed by women.

e).  Develop familiarity with the major public programs, for example Medicare, Medi-Cal (Medicaid), community mental health systems and learn to apply a framework for analysis of health and men

The start here module has been expanded to include links to an array of support and help services from technology to the campus.

This image shows all of the page links available in the start here module.

This is an example of the overview page that appears at the start of each module.  These pages are formatted the same throughout the course to facilitate readability and consistency.  All links are duplicated as stand-alone links within the module throughout the course.  All links use text instead of their URL to improve accessibility.

Faculty Biography

Sheryle Stafford, MSW, MS is a Southern California native who has wandered her way to Sac State.  After meandering through a handful of colleges and universities she finally received her BA, MSW, and MS in Criminal Justice from Sac State.  While further destinations called, she landed in Yuba County and has been teaching at her alma mater since 2013 in the Division of Social Work.  When not teaching, grading, or working on improving Canvas courses, Ms. Stafford enjoys her two dogs, home improvement projects, and anything that has to do with wandering the outdoors.  Her words to live by come from Tolkien, "Not all those who wander are lost."
