Peer Network: Online Intercultural Competence Activity

To build Intercultural Competence this group selected the Human Values Continuum.  This activity provided participants a few value statements to reflect on and discuss with others how certain values resonate in their worldview.  For examples, statements such as "Change is Good/Tradition is important" may provide participants time to reflect on how they feel about the statement as an individual and within a cultural group. Which one would you choose Change is Good/Tradition is important based on how you were raised within a cultural group?

This activity's level of challenge is medium since it does require participants to reflect and dig-deep on their values and others may not agree with other world views. This activity should be conducted after students understand their intersectionality and experience low level activities about cultural awareness.

To modified the activity to be online we used the google Jamboard as way to offer some of the same curriculum in the zoom world.  This activity was successful on-line since participants could visual see others ideas and values.

Peer Network Program Evaluation Plan

Since Fall 2019 until Spring 2021 we have served over 1100 students in courses, particularly in First-Year Seminar courses. Back in March 2020 when we revised the workshops to go on zoom, we used the activities in the book Building Cultural Competence by Kate Berardo and Darla K. Deardorff.   We only conducted 3 activities on-line for 60 min. We used breakout rooms for more individual conversations and sharing with others about cultural differences.

We offered each course surveys after the 60 min. workshops that provided students the opportunity to learn more about their    cultural identities through peer-to-peer 1D1D806D-49CE-4E17-B689-43E20C9BE76F.heic Download 1D1D806D-49CE-4E17-B689-43E20C9BE76F.heic  interactions in the classroom environment. This program is to foster and validate students' social cultural ways of being and learning in higher education and beyond. Faculty and students loved the interactions.

We like to share that Diversity is a reality but acts of inclusion and advocacy for  racial, educational,  and social justice are choices we can make to create impactful institutional change.
