MATH 107B: Fundamental Mathematical Concepts
MATH 107B, Fundamental Mathematical Concepts, is a math content course for elementary pre-service teachers. I taught this course both in Fall 2020 and Spring 2021.
Reflection on Instructional Change:
One practice from the ACUE course that I implemented is the Note-taking activity. I gave structured lesson notes with blank spaces so that students can type their solutions and notes when they are attending class or watching the class recordings. These lecture notes are due once every week. Students were also asked to submit reflections on questions:
- List at least two key points from the lesson:
- List the common misconceptions about the topic:
- Write down one thing that you learned that you have not thought about before?
- What did you learn in relation to the learning objectives?
- Connections:How do these concepts connect to previous content topic?
- What questions/ confusions do you still have about the topic?
- (Optional)Additional thoughts or comments
Implementing this practice was beneficial to both my teaching and student learning. This activity motivated students to attend class or watch recordings for the week and practice the problems done in the class. Students talked about what they had learned, or what confusions they still have. This helped me to prepare my following lessons. Sometimes students ask a content question that I discussed with the whole class in the following week.
I really enjoyed all the ACUE modules including the downloadable reference pdfs and the CTL "Observe and Analyze" session with my colleagues. I am thankful for the conversations that happened synchronously and asynchronously. In the CTL "Observe and Analyze" session, one aha moment was the feedback that I got and was able to implement in the following class meeting.
