Reflection On Instructional Change

Many practices were implemented into my course, however, the one which made the biggest impact on me was the Module Road Map. I implemented the road map by having all course modules starting with a Module Overview which states what the module will cover. In addition, there are Module Learning Objectives (MLO) and Student Learning Outcomes (SLO) along with a list of the pages to follow and links to any assignments which are due. The module closes with a Module Exit Card which recaps the Module Learning Objectives and Student Learning Outcomes along with links to assignments which are due at the end of each module.

Implementing this practice impacted my teaching by being able to stay on track with the Module Learning Objectives and Student Learning Outcomes. Students knew exactly what was being covered within each module, and what engaging activities were to be used, such as Jam Board, and with the Module Exit Card students were able to revisit the MLOs and SLOs. In addition, I included a mid semester Student Check-In Google form where students were able to answer what was working and what was not. One student stated in the Google form the Videos w/in Modules, Instructor Update Videos, Canvas Discussion Boards, Presentations in Modules were the most useful for learning.

Many of the activities within the Promoting Active Learning Online course influenced changes I made within my course and my instruction. However, I gained a great deal of wealth from the Observe and Analyze Videos. This not only aided me in observing not so good practices and discussing why, but being able to analyze and then state changes which could be made only reinforced what I have been learning in the FLC activities.

The Observe and Analyze sessions were not only insightful for me, this was also a way for me to learn from others and what changes could be implemented. My aha moment came when I discussed strategies for presenting information to students and one comment was to provide  .. students with a listening guide to use to take notes while watching the TED talk, and the APA videos. This was helpful and a strategy I have been using in my course.
