STAT 1: Introduction to Statistics

Reflection on Instructional Change:

One practice from the ACUE course that I implemented was the use of break-out rooms for synchronous discussions where students were put in groups of 3-4 to discuss given topic/ problem sets with their peers. I was also visiting these break-out rooms.

Students liked and enjoyed the break-out room discussions. This gave them an opportunity to communicate with their peers and have quality discussions. This practice not only improved student learning, it also impacted my teaching. It helped me identify misconceptions from students' discussions and direct students in the right direction when sometimes they lost the focal point of the topic. Below is some feedback from students on break-out rooms:

I found all the FLC activities were very interactive and useful. But if I have to pick one activity that was most influential, that would be "Practice and Reflect Written Assignment". This activity made me really reflect on the purpose and improvement of practices that I had implemented in my classes and also plan for future implementation.

Furthermore, I enjoyed getting valuable feedback from my peers in the "Observe and Analyze Session". One "take away" from this session was the availability of some online tools to have anonymous class discussions during live class sessions.

Faculty Biography

My Pic

I am an Assistant Professor in the department of Mathematics and Statistics. I joined Sac State in Fall 2019. Before joining Sac State I worked in Texas form 2015-2019.

I graduated from Eastern Michigan University in 2009 with an M.S. in Math. While working on my Masters I discovered my fantasy for different kinds of data, which eventually led to my interest in the field of Statistics and making me earn a Ph.D. in Statistics from Auburn University in 2015. My experience in the doctoral program helped me discover my interest in teaching and research. Consulting is another perk that I enjoy for being a Statistician.

In my free time I love to cook, paint, watch movies, socialize, spend time with my nephews and nieces, fly planes, sailboats and ride horses.
