EDC 214 Dynamics of Human Development

Reflection on Instructional Change:

I implemented “Note-taking” strategies in my course. The “AL2 Teaching Powerful Note-Taking” module was very eye-opening in that I never thought about how my students are taking notes. My students are graduate students, and I guess I assumed that they already know this information.

In the first class, I provided information on the benefits of note-taking, note-taking tips, and software. And students uploaded weekly activity each week. Information on the syllabus as below:

Weekly Activity (14 Points) Each Week (Sunday 11:59 pm)

You will submit a weekly activity by Sunday 11:59 pm each week. Submit your notes (e.g., outline, summary) of the readings and lecture for the week. The notes should cover the important concepts from the lecture and readings. A minimum of 1 page is required. Each weekly activity is worth 1 point. The notes do not need to be detailed or in a particular style. The goal of this assignment is to prepare you for the exams in this class and outside of class.

Many students were confused or struggled with time management in note-taking. So, I provided small group discussions in the first few weeks of the semester that students can check in with each other and share ideas on note-taking. As the semester goes, students seemed to find a routine that works best for them and appreciated the note-taking activity. One example from students’ comments is, “I greatly disliked the weekly activity of turning in our notes at first, but it has encouraged me to take notes on the reading which I have not done before, and now I am doing for other classes as well.” After implementing this instructional change, I plan to keep doing this weekly activity but add information to clarify expectations (i.e., a minimum of 100 words, include contents from both the textbook and lecture).

"Observe and Analyze Session" with colleagues were very informative. I learned few strategies from the colleagues, such as including learning objectives in each module, effective communication with students, etc.

	Dr. HyunGyung Joo is an assistant professor in Counselor Education and program coordinator of School Counseling specialization. She earned her Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision at the Pennsylvania State University. She specializes in bullying, school connectedness, wellness, and mindfulness. She teaches classes in the Counseling program (i.e., Counseling Theory, Group Processing in Counseling, Educational Research, Dynamics of Human Development, Counseling Children and Youth, Practicum in Communication, Practicum in Counseling, Field Study in Counseling).
