Two-factor authentication (2FA) strengthens access security by requiring two methods (also referred to as factors) to verify your identity. These factors can include something you know - like a username and password, plus something you have - like a smartphone app to approve authentication requests.
2FA protects against phishing Links to an external site., social engineering and password brute-force attacks and secures your logins from attackers exploiting weak or stolen credentials.
All students are required to utilize Duo. They are required to use a valid authentication method when logging in to their account at My Sac State Links to an external site. or any other Sac State online service, like Canvas, Global Protect VPN, or accessing the remote computer labs.
Add a new Duo device
After the initial set up, you can add any number of devices to sign in to Duo. This can help in the event you do not always have your phone or keychain token available. Follow the steps at to learn how to add new devices for Duo Links to an external site..
You can use the following options for Duo, listed in order of the Service Desk's recommendations:
- Duo Mobile app (iOS and Android)
- This option is the most reliable method and easiest to use. This option works when you are connect to the internet or your phone has a data connection. This method works globally.
- U2F Token
- A U2F token is a small device the size of a keychain. It generates a code that you will enter when you encounter the Duo log in page. This option also works globally.
- Call to landline or cell phone
- While this option is quick to set up, there are some considerations. Some times, your cell phone carrier will block the call from Duo. Calling a landline would require that you are near the phone at the time of the call.
