NURS 165: Hospice & Palliative Nursing Care

Reflection on Instructional Change:

  • One practice I plan to implement to improve on concept exploration is to introduce an activity for students, such as think-pair-share, after a first video for each module. Another practice I plan to implement is modifying the idea of an exit ticket in an online course. I have not used wrap-up pages in my modules but I plan to add reflection-type survey questions in a wrap-up page at the end of the module so students can write about how they can apply what they learn to practice and also start if they have more questions.

  • Implementing these practices may impact my teaching because they may help students understand the importance of completing each learning activity in order to apply them to their practice. Currently I provide information about why a student should read an article or review a video, and how what they learn will be applied in the active learning assignments or in their own nursing practice, but I don’t break up and ensure learning throughout the module and after different activities, so by starting with concept exploration and ending with a wrap-up reflection, I can ensure students understand the value of completing the activities toward their learning and practice.

  • Of the ACUE activities, I believe the ones that were the most valuable were the implementation resources, as they provided clear examples for implementing changes in my course. These materials were easy to save and refer to later as I built my Canvas course. I also found the online discussion forums helpful, as it is useful to hear from other faculty about strategies that are effective or not effective in their courses.

Faculty Biography

Sharpp profile

I am pleased to welcome you to this course. My research experience has mostly been in gerontological nursing, but I have worked with and conducted research with people across the age spectrum. Recently I have been teaching more classes online and have received my Teaching Online Certificate. I have been passionate about gerontological nursing since my first job working with older adults with dementia when I was in high school.  My husband and I graduated from nursing school at the University of Minnesota in 2001 and soon after moved so I could start graduate school at the University of California San Francisco. I had my two children during my doctoral program, where I completed a qualitative dissertation examining the care of older adults with dementia in assisted living. We moved to the Sacramento area in 2008 where I completed a postdoctoral fellowship at UC Davis. I was fortunate to join the nursing faculty at Sac State in 2012. I have been mostly teaching in the RN-BSN program since that time.
