ART 120: Advanced Drawing
Reflection on Instructional Change:
I implemented microlectures in my course--beginning in the fall semseter. In the videos I chunk information into brief and independent videos. Within each microlecture, I provide the students with ways in which they may interact, process, retrieve, and apply the material. Rather than call the videos microlectures, I prefer to think of them as micro-studios or micro-practicum, as I teach a course that is completely a studio discipline—painting and drawing. The steps I took were to begin putting ideas together in small microvideos that in some cases I edited together. I did it this way because I felt it was the easiest method for me to capture myself in a candid fashion so that the videos are dynamic and informative.
Since I we have only just begun the semester I am still unsure how the videos are working. However, in one such video that teaches students advanced skills of hatching to create form, I could see the evidence of success in the skills they showed in their drawings the first week after viewing the video.
During the ACUE course I was most engaged with the short videos that were part of each module. In the past, with face-to-face courses, I had no need for videos as all the course study took place in the painting and drawing studio. Moving online for the fall semester necessitated new ways of thinking about delivering course materials--videos seemed a very viable method.
In the "Course Demonstration Videos: Videos of faculty effectively teaching online", that were part of the ACUE study, I had many examples of how I might explore instructional videos that were both content rich and engaging.
The "Observe and Analyze Videos" were an added layer of study with regard to creating effective videos. In the first week, I even integrated a students video segment whereby students created there own video, introducing us to their home studio environment.

Mike Welsh Inspires with "Super Simple Videos" The above image is from the ACUE Module "Developing Effective Modules and Micro Lectures". This video had the most impact on me as I developed my course because of the ease and honesty I felt in watching Mike Welsh talk about creating short videos. It gave me permission to be myself, to be direct, and most importantly, to be vulnerable. |
