Check for Alternative Text for Images

For any images in your PDFs and other documents, you must ensure that alternative text description is available because this is the information that is provided to people using assistive technology. 

To quickly check for and add alternative text to images, please do the following:

  1. Open your PDF document in Adobe Acrobat Pro
  2. Click the Tools tab and select the Accessibility Tool option. The Accessibility Tool panel will display to the right of your document. 
  3. Select the Set Alternate Text option.
  4. You will see a prompt "Acrobat will detect all figures in this document ..." Click the Ok button to continue. 
  5. Adobe will go through your document and highlight the images available and display a Set Alternate Text box. 
  6. If alternate text is missing for the selected image, enter a description in the Set Alternate Text box. 
  7. If the image is for decorative purposes, select the "Decorative figure" checkbox.
  8. Click the Next arrow to continue checking for and adding alternate text to the next image in the document.
  9. When you are done adding all alternate text to all images, click the Save and Close button . 
  10. Save your PDF changes by going to File > Save As.
