AI Treatment Planning

Reflection on Instructional Change:

I learned so much from the AI Tools for Teaching & Learning Workshop and it really spurred my brainstorming process regarding how I could implement AI into courses where students not only have permission to use AI but where they are encouraged to do so because it supports their learning. This led me to considering the final cumulative assignment that includes a full biopsychosocial assessment and treatment plan. In the past, students struggled to formulate goals into SMART format. Through experimentation, I found that ChatGPT is great at creating SMART goals from assessment data. I decided to teach students how to use ChatGPT to support SMART goal formulation in their assignment (and for on-going professional use). I offered an overview of how to prompt ChatGPT for treatment planning goals during lecture and then included the following language in the assignment: “You can use ChatGPT to support your creation of the goals and objectives for your plan. If you choose to use ChatGPT please reference it and review it for appropriateness/thoroughness. This is the only section of the paper that can contain generative ai content!!! If you choose not to use ChatGPT please note that.”

For the assignment, 85% of the students chose to use ChatGPT. Overall, the grade was higher in this section of the paper than in previous semesters with higher quality goal development and goal formatting. Students did cite AI generated content appropriately and as directed, did not seem to use it in other areas of the paper.

From the FLC activities I really appreciated the learning and assignment related to AI Policy Development. This seems like the most important part of creating ethical engagement with AI in the class community. I valued the opportunity to consider what ethical engagement looked like for each course I teach and from there create a clear policy for students. I included AI policies in all my courses this semester.

Finally, in "Observe and Analyze Session" with my colleagues, I valued the opportunity to receive feedback regarding my integration of AI for treatment planning. Colleagues offered great suggestions regarding how I can explicitly outline the question on the assignment to create more expertise related to using AI for treatment goal formation while ensuring that students critically think about the material that is generated.

Practice and Reflect Teaching and Learning with AI:

The AI Tools for Teaching & Learning Workshop from the Chancellor’s Office completely shifted my outlook and skill regarding integrating AI in the classroom. The course prompted me to use AI tools that I had never considered. Further, I valued the opportunity to create AI policies for my courses and have a much better understanding of how to detect AI use. I think challenges related to ethical use will always be part of incorporating AI into the classroom (including environmental impact).

One AI tool I incorporated was ChatGPT, which students used to support goal formation related to their final assignment. This demonstrated that AI can be a helpful learning process when used with support and the student’s own critical thinking. I will definitely continue to contemplate and incorporate AI where it supports learning and professional development.

	I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 25 years of social work experience in Sacramento. Currently, I am the Executive Director for a non-profit that serves vulnerable women and children. Since 2015, I have also worked as part-time faculty at CSUS in the the Division of Social Work. It is my honor and joy to support new social workers enter this marvelous profession!
