CE 160: Intro to Structural Analysis

Reflection on Instructional Change:

Strategies for fostering peer to peer connections are implemented in CE 160. It is critical that students work together and start practicing the skills they will need when they entire professional practice. These skills include receiving feedback from others and providing feedback in a constructive way.

Peer review problems will consist of a randomly assigned problem in Canvas. Students will also be assigned a peer to both provide and receive a review of the problem solution initial attempt. Student will then submit a revised solution of their work to receive a grade based on accuracy. A new tactic will be to have students perform a peer review on the same example problem solution and then discuss and reflect on the usefulness of the peer review itself before assigning them to review another student's work.

Strategies for fostering student to instructor connections will also be implemented in CE 160. Not enough students take advantage of office hours for a variety of reasons. Office hours are a prime opportunity for students to clarify misconceptions and receive additional support to be successful.

Office hours will be referred to as Student Drop-In Hours and an assignment will be set that requires students to either come to office hours or make an appointment before the first exam. I plan to create a Canvas page with quotes from past students on how office hours was helpful for them as well as give students conversation starters so that they feel less intimidated to come to office hours.

Faculty Bio

Dr. Fogarty is a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) who earned her B.S. in Civil Engineering from Johns Hopkins University, M.S. degrees in both Civil & Aerospace Engineering, a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, and a certificate in Engineering Education Research from the University of Michigan. She is currently an Associate Professor in Civil Engineering at California State University, Sacramento with research interests ranging from the seismic behavior of steel structures to improving/expanding the educational methods used in the formation of engineers.
