Reflection on Instructional Change:

One of the practices that I chose was the syllabus assignment/activity, I chose this to encourage students to interact with and read the syllabus. This also gave me the opportunity to find out what items they felt were important in the syllabus as well as what they needed clarification on. I implemented this by letting the students know before our synchronous Zoom session to make sure to have access to the syllabus either on their computer, printed, or in Canvas. When we were in the synchronous session I had them individually choose three items on the syllabus they felt were important or needed clarification on, they then went into breakout rooms to discuss these items with one another and decided on which three items they would report on to the class as a whole. Then when everyone was back in the main room a reporter from each group gave the three items and I was able to comment on or clarify each one.

Students were able to clarify expectations that are in the syllabus, it also gave them the opportunity to interact with one another in the groups and begin to create a sense of community in the course. This took place because they had to review the syllabus to complete the assignment and this allowed them to identify items that were not clear to them or they felt were important. Then in the larger group report on these items and get clarification from me.

The learning activities in the FLC that most influenced the changes I made were the demonstration videos of an activity being implemented and the implementation resources. The videos helped me to think of courses that would benefit from the activities and then the implementation resources helped me to create the activity and adapt it for my course. Then being able to write up the practice and reflect assignment was helpful in clearly noting the breakdown of how it would happen, how it went, as well as what changes could be made in the future to improve if needed.

The Observe and Analyze Session was a great place to see what colleagues had done in their own courses as well as receive feedback on our own implementation. The additional changes I will make the next time I use this activity will be to add in a visual timer for students to keep on track as well as a link to the syllabus in the chat when explaining the activity, these were both suggestions from my session.

Faculty Bio

Instructor Information
	I have been teaching at CSUS since 2010. I currently teach in the RN to BSN program as well as the Undergraduate BSN program. Before I began teaching I worked as a Labor & Delivery nurse at San Joaquin General Hospital, and as a school nurse for Stockton Unified School District. While working as a school nurse in SUSD, I worked with a colleague to apply for and was awarded a Healthy Start grant for one of the high schools in our district. While working with community resources and the district to put a comprehensive health center program together for this school, I found my passion in community health nursing. During this time, I earned my MSN in Nursing Education from CSU Dominguez Hills and began teaching part time. Seeing the ah-ha moment when students understand the importance of holistic care is one of my favorite things! When I decided to teach full-time I went back to school and earned my DNP from a consortium between CSU Fresno and CSU San Jose. When I’m not teaching, I enjoy spending time traveling with my family.
