Reflection on Instructional Change:

In the Checking for Student Understanding module I picked prepare to address common misconceptions because it connects well with an assignment students struggle understanding. I have students write in the report genre but they typically don’t know the difference between a report & an essay.

One student noted in their reflection “As I don’t have a lot of experience writing reports, the handout was a good visual example of the layout my report should follow. It also helped me understand how my report should be organized in terms of adding aspects such as observation, purpose, etc. I will use the information I have learned after reading this sample to make sure my progress draft for project 2 follows a similar structure. Also, in terms of the content of the paper, make sure to include everything that is relative to the subsections such as terminology, genre, and forum”. I think that because so many students are used to writing essays the report is a mystery to them; that’s why I provided the resources to help them through this process then asked them to reflect on the resources to check their understanding of the sample & genre structure.

My interaction with the Demo Videos/Videos of faculty effectively teaching was most impactful. I like the practical versatility of them and how it shows the instructors effectively using the evidence-based practices. It helps me reflect on how I might implement these practices and techniques in my own class.

I was apprehensive to share in my observe & analyze session because it was an actual student interaction on Zoom during class but it was helpful to discuss with colleagues what positive things they saw going on. I also gained a sense of what other professors are doing in separate fields; it's interesting to see the various applications of the same ACUE materials.

Faculty Bio

	I've been teaching composition courses at Sacramento State since 2014. I received both my BA & MA in English so I'm proud to say that I was 'Made at Sac State'. Some areas of interest in composition are first year writing, writing assessment, equity, & metacognitive writing.
