Reflection on Instructional Change:
I implemented "Ensuring Equitable Access to Learning" practices to support student success and Implement grading practices. ACCY 1 is the first introductory accounting course. Most students are freshmen with no prior background in business. They tend to perform better in the later of the course time than the earlier, and perform less in time-constrained tests. Given these characteristics of students, I diversified ways to evaluate students' performance and implemented grading policies. In particular, I gave a low-stakes self-assessment quiz before the first exam to help students check their readiness for the exam. I also provided multiple opportunities for students to earn credit: assigning different weights on tests: highest, mid, and lowest. This grading system is designed so that one low score on an assessment does not severely impact students’ final grades, and improve their performance in various ways.
Students were very positive about diversified opportunities to get ready for exams and improve their performance.
I believe I benefitted most from "Observe & Analyze" where I was able to understand techniques at a deeper level and gain insight from common mistakes in implementing specific strategies. Also, I really enjoyed communicating with other faculty members through the opportunities to exchange ideas and provide (receive) feedback. I also like "Practice and Reflect Written Assignment". This practice helped me more deeply think about my current course and better ways to improve student learning.
I learned new techniques to create a more inclusive and supportive learning environment!
